Becoming a member of Harlequin Youth Theatre is by audition only. Our performing members are aged between 9 and 21 years and we keep our membership under continuous review seeking to maximise opportunities for young people to perform onstage. When we do have space for new members we promote our auditions through our social media channels on Facebook, Instagram and X.
What you can expect when you audition is that we teach you part of a dance routine and we teach you a song, then you will sing and dance with a few other auditionees in front of a panel (normally about 5/6 people) which is made up of Committee members, past members and/or Production team (director, choroegrapher, producer or musical director). Don't worry no one expects you to know anything off by heart or be perfect!
We are always oversubscribed for auditions, so we can never take everyone who wants to join, and sometimes you may not get in first time but may get in at a future second audition. If you are successful in getting in you will normally get the opportunity to perform in 2 shows per year. Performing Membership currently costs £150 per annum, this is reviewed annually at our AGM in August. For each production a member performs in there is a levy charge of approximately £20 which contributes towards costume and set costs.
Rehearsals take place on a Wednesday and Thursday evening between 7.30 and 10pm during normal school term and are normally at Braidbar Primary School in Giffnock. The exact times can vary depending on the needs of each production, but it is expected that where a member commits to a production they attend every rehearsal where possible. We also have Saturday all day rehearsals (10-5pm) during each rehearsal run, there are generally 2 of these in each show rehearsal period. It is absolutely essential where a member commits to a particular show that they are available to attend each day of that week from the Monday technical and dress rehearsals, plus each performance-this is mandatory.
As a member of Harlequin Youth Theatre we also have a social calendar which includes our Xmas Party and various theatre outings and other events.
